On Urban Planning and Procedural Modeling

A digital framework for an urban planning process was developed using the 3D modeling software Rhinoceros, the parametric plug-in Grasshopper, and other standalone software. Already existing and self-developed digital tools were applied to a case study in the 20th district of Vienna. The replacement of an existing train station structure with a new mixed-use neighborhood in a central location is investigated. Traffic flow, use-mix, energetic and climate aspects influence the concept as key parameters and are used to compare the scenarios with each other. The use of digital tools in the early stages and the possible impact on the planning course, negotiations with stakeholders, planners and residents is demonstrated.
