Lecture – Urban Density – 01 – Concept & Examples

In this lecture, we will take a look at a widely known and widely used concept in urban planning, which is urban density. In the first part, we firstly will clarify what the term means, how it is used in urban planning and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of high and low density. In the second part, we will then get to know some measures for quantifying density and exercise how we can calculate them in a parametric modelling environment. And finally in the third part, we will look at limitations of the concept of density and introduce a calculation principle that might overcome some of these issues.
