In the last decades, cities’ population has grown exponentially because urban areas appeal to many people to these areas since they concentrate a large number of services and opportunities. High urban density (demographically and in land use) is part of the preconditions for sustainable urbanization and economic growth because it allows us to provide more services in a small piece of land. Nevertheless, high density in cities also means a high density of side effects or by-products. One example is waste management, which has to be gathered, transported and processed regularly. The challenge of processing urban waste is one aspect that high density faces.
