Today high density is considered a precondition for sustainable urban development because it presumes that there are more people living and working in a smaller area within the city, this would support infrastructure development condensed in this area, and along with these conditions a smaller environmental impact. For example in transportation, high density and mixed-use support shorter travel distances, which needs less road expansion, and more condensed investment, and more people using the same infrastructure, making it also economically more sustainable.
The challenges for this typology is to guarantee the basic environmental conditions, for example, natural ventilation and sunlight. Also, such condensed development can have stronger threats to health such as higher noise levels and less access to green areas.
