Abstract

Parametric Modeling is a powerful tool in the architectural and urban design process. By creating models, that do not only represent the geometry but rather relationships between the geometrical elements it becomes possible to create numerous variations of a design concept. These design variants can be analysed and optimized for certain criteria. Thereby the designer gains a deeper insight into his/her design concept. In this course, we introduce you to Parametric Architecture using Grasshopper and Rhino3D software. You learn how to establish your own algorithmic design and thinking method.

Learning objectives

The course aims to support both Architects and Urban Designers with basic knowledge of the software, as well as different methods for designing buildings and city geometries.  This will include theoretical knowledge for algorithmic thinking as well as practical exercises for parametric algorithms.

In this seminar you will learn the basics for parametric modeling using the visual programming software Grasshopper for Rhino. After this basic training you apply the methods to an own design concept. The knowledge provided through online seminars will be documented in several lectures and exercises.

Requirements

For the course no prior knowledge is required.

Alternatives to Rhino

Allthough Rhino is made specifically for BIM-implementation, there are other alternatives with similar software structure. I've been learning Blender since two years and the node-editor poses a similar structure of parametric 3D-design. Advantages would be low-cost, indefinite usability due to open-use licence and the same principle of parametric design in geometry and shader manipulation.

The speed and the content of the last three videos

Thank you for the tutorials. I would like to say that the speed of teaching and the content in the last three videos was somehow more than the rest of the tutorial. That made it a little bit hard to follow, and I had to decrease the speed to 75% to be able to learn what each component does. But in general, I learned how to use the components and to make a letter parametric. Thank you.

It was fun - and thats what matters

The tutorials are great and and teach everything you need. The only gripe i have is that you can only read the full task AFTER finishing the tutorial. This meant for me that i noticd i didnt follow the Task quite right AFTER finishing my Letter while going through the tutorials.

How to Structure the Crasshopper Algorithym

I like the step by step approach when it comes to the structure of grasshopper and how this affects the way to create the letter. The introduction lectures are also fun to watch and sum up some general questions on the design process in a very understandable way.
